Can an old wired burglar alarm be upgraded?

Often, yes. Where the existing cabling and equipment are suitable, an older wired burglar alarm can be modernised by replacing the control panel, keypad and communications equipment while re-using the wiring and, where appropriate, the existing detectors. That avoids a full replacement and can add app control and alarm notifications, depending on the existing installation.

What is replaced and what stays?

The parts that date an alarm are the control panel, the keypad and the communications equipment. These are replaced. The cabling in the walls and, where appropriate, the detectors and door contacts already fitted can stay, provided they are in good condition.

Keeping the wiring is what makes an upgrade cost-effective. There is no chasing of walls or lifting of floors, and the work is far less disruptive than fitting a new wired system from scratch.

What is a hybrid upgrade?

A hybrid system keeps the wired sensors and adds wireless devices to the same panel. Depending on the existing system, the panel can be upgraded and compatible wireless devices and communications added, giving mobile app control, remote management and alarm notifications on an alarm that was originally wired.

It suits a home that has been extended since the alarm went in: the new rooms get wireless sensors with no new cabling, and the original rooms keep the sensors they have.

When is a new alarm the better option?

Where the cabling is damaged, the equipment is no longer supported, or you would prefer wireless throughout, a new system makes more sense. Locks & Alarms Ltd installs wireless smart alarms, including the Pyronix Enforcer and Ajax, where a wired system is unsuitable.

The firm works with established manufacturers including Texecom, Pyronix, Scantronic (Eaton) and Sterling, so most older systems can be assessed. One reviewer in DA2 had an alarm “upgraded to a more up to date system”. A free quote visit confirms what can be re-used.
