Emergency call-out

Can a smart lock be fitted to my existing door?

Usually, yes. Many smart locks are made to replace or work with the lock already on a uPVC, composite or wooden door, so the door itself stays. What fits depends on the door, its locking mechanism and the cylinder. A locksmith checks these at a quote visit before recommending a smart lock, a mechanical code lock or a high-security cylinder.

What does a smart lock need from the door?

The door has to close and lock cleanly first. A smart lock drives the same mechanism a key would, so a door that sticks or has dropped on its hinges puts strain on it. Hinges, keeps and the locking mechanism are checked and adjusted before a smart lock goes on.

The type of lock matters too. A uPVC or composite door normally has a multipoint mechanism worked by lifting the handle, while a wooden door may have a separate latch and deadlock. Different smart locks suit each, which is why the door is looked at before a product is chosen.

What happens if the battery or the app fails?

Smart locks run on batteries and warn you well before they run out. Most also keep a second way in, such as a key, a keypad code or a fob, so a flat battery or a lost phone does not leave you outside. Ask which backup a lock has before it is fitted.

Access is managed from an app, so you can give someone entry and remove it again without cutting or collecting keys.

Smart lock, code lock or key: which suits?

A smart lock suits a home or let property where access changes often. A mechanical code lock has no batteries or app and suits offices, commercial premises, gates and external access points. A keyed-alike system keeps ordinary keys but lets one key open every lock.

Locks & Alarms Ltd fits smart locks with app-based access, mechanical code locks and keyed-alike systems, and fits replacement locks with anti-drill and anti-snap cylinders as standard. Call 01322 436084 or book a free quote to have the door assessed.
