What is an anti-snap lock and do I need one?

An anti-snap lock is a euro-cylinder built to resist lock snapping, a forced-entry method where the cylinder is broken at its weakest point so the door can be opened. Anti-snap cylinders use sacrificial sections and reinforcement so the lock keeps holding if attacked. Locks & Alarms Ltd fits anti-drill and anti-snap cylinders as standard on replacement locks.

How does lock snapping work?

Lock snapping targets the euro-cylinder fitted to many uPVC and composite doors. The cylinder has a weak point near its centre, and applying force there can break it in two. With the broken section removed, the mechanism behind it is exposed and the door can be opened. The method needs no skill and no specialist tools, which is why it is worth defending against.

A cylinder that protrudes past the door handle makes it worse, because the overhang gives an attacker something to grip. A cylinder that sits flush, and is built to resist snapping, removes that easy purchase point.

How does an anti-snap cylinder resist it?

An anti-snap cylinder is designed so that a snap attack fails or leaves the door still locked. A sacrificial section at the outer end is made to break away under force while the core of the lock stays intact and keeps holding the door. Many designs add hardened anti-drill pins and anti-pick features as well.

Fitting matters as much as the cylinder itself. It must be measured to sit flush with the door hardware, because even a good cylinder is weakened if it overhangs. A locksmith measures the door and fits the correct size.

Do I need one?

If your door uses a euro-cylinder and you do not know whether it is anti-snap, treat it as an upgrade worth making, because snapping specifically targets the standard cylinders it would replace. Locks & Alarms Ltd fits anti-drill and anti-snap cylinders as standard on replacement locks, so any lock the firm replaces carries this protection without you having to ask.
