Do CCTV cameras deter burglars?
Visible CCTV cameras give a burglar a reason to pick another property. A camera raises the chance of being identified, and most burglars prefer targets that carry less risk. Deterrence depends on the cameras being obvious, working and able to record usable footage, including at night. CCTV works best alongside an alarm, good locks and lighting.
Why visible cameras matter
A burglar weighing up a property looks at risk. A camera in plain sight adds risk: it says the property is watched and that anyone approaching may be recorded. A hidden camera can only help after the event. A visible one can change the decision before it is made.
Position matters as much as presence. Cameras should cover the obvious approaches, front door, side gate, driveway, and be mounted where they can be seen but not easily reached or knocked aside.
A camera that is clearly broken, pointing at the sky or trailing a loose cable does the opposite job. It signals that the security is not maintained.
Recording quality and night vision
Deterrence only holds if the footage behind it is usable. A blurred shape identifies nobody. HD cameras can record a face, clothing or a number plate, and that is what makes footage worth something to the police and to an insurer.
Night performance matters most, because darkness is when cover is expected. A Checkatrade reviewer in DA5, a customer of the firm for around eight years, described upgrading to a full HD system giving “a much better quality and improved night time vision”.
Locks & Alarms Ltd has Checkatrade-verified CCTV work including an eight-channel recorder with five cameras installed in DA1.
CCTV as one layer, not the whole answer
Cameras record; they do not stop a door being forced. An intruder alarm makes noise at the moment of entry, good locks slow entry down, and lighting removes dark approaches. Each layer covers a gap the others leave.
Locks & Alarms Ltd installs alarms, CCTV and locks, and its review history includes combined work, one DA7 reviewer had a home alarm system and security cameras installed as a single job. The free quote visit looks at the property as a whole and sets out which layers earn their place.
